Lakindra Mitchell Dove is a former practitioner who worked with children, youth, and families, and has over 15 years of practice experience in the areas of stress, trauma, and mental health. Her research on Black hair and hair care among young girls was inspired by her experiences working with youth in foster care and advocating for their hair care needs. This was also the focus of her dissertation, Got Hair that Flows in the Wind: The Complexity of Hair and Identity Among African American Female Adolescents in Foster Care. Dr. Dove’s research also focuses on the experiences of Black youth and racial/ethnic identity development and how to support youth who participate in youth mentoring programs. Her research emphasizes the importance of youth voice and agency and is grounded in racial equity and social justice. Her professional expertise has involved creating training and educational content to support organizations working with youth and families.
